We utilized this text for a graduate level course. I found it to be well worded and a good introductory text. I do not have much experience with other books on this subject, so it is hard to make fair comparisons. The authors are competent in describing the lessons and present seemingly plausible case scenarios.
The book puts forth document examination in an academic arena with a solid foundation based on published authors in our field. It is an amazingly good refresher course for the long time examiner, and an enlightening primer for the neophyte.
I recommend this book because it gives so much information about the role of a crime scene investigator including certification, professional development, ethics and professionalism. It covers legal issues such as Admissibility of Evidence, Frye v. US, Federal Rules of Evidence, Daubert v. Merrell Dow, chain of custody, forensic photography, and court appearance and testimony as an expert witness including demonstrative evidence.
The book is designed with an innovative approach because each chapter opens with a continuing fictional narrative providing the reader with a captivating story of a crime scene.
